MYTH: The thicker and creamier the better

REALITY: Many products are too thick to penetrate skin, meaning no matter what ingredients are in there...they are not going to be effective!

"Skin is a sophisticated organ, and it's selective about what it lets through," explains Dr. Obagi. "In order for a skincare product to be truly effective, it needs to penetrate the stratum corneum-the skin's barrier against the elements and the environment. The molecular weight of many skincare ingredients is too heavy to penetrate the skin, leaving them sitting on the surface instead."

MYTH: The highest SPF is going to give you superior protection from the sun. Or the SPF numbers game.

REALITY: In recent years, skincare companies have been creating very high SPF sunscreens. Contrary to what may seem to be conventional logic, an SPF 100 doesn't offer twice the protection of an SPF 50. SPF protection does not increase proportionally with an increased SPF number. People get a false sense of security after they put on a very high SPF. What's more important than the SPF number, is the amount of sunscreen that is applied. Use a full shot glass for your body, which is about 1 oz. Slather it all over. If you're in the sun during mid-day, reapply every hour or two.

MYTH: Skin goes to sleep at night

REALITY: "Nighttime is actually when skin cells are most active," explains Dr. Obagi. "Nighttime skincare is arguably more important than daytime-and also the best time to use retinol/retinoic acid.

MYTH: Night creams are just for your face

REALITY: "The complexion isn't the only place we show age-hands can be a dead giveaway," explains Dr. Obagi. "Protecting the appearance, elasticity and texture of hands is an essential part of anti-aging care. Look for formulas with retinol, vitamins C and E and coenzyme-10 to promote younger-looking hands overnight. This will brightens skin, improve elasticity and protects against damaging free radicals, minimize lines, wrinkles, dark spots and loss of firmness."
