Arbitration between State and UPW ends

The arbitration hearing between the State of Hawaii and United Public Workers union concluded Monday.

Both sides presented their arguments to the neutral arbitrator over the past week.

Tuesday, both sides went back into mediation.  They are trying to settle on a new contract for Unit 10 members which include correctional, health and institutional workers.  A decision from the arbitrator would likely come down in January and both sides would be forced to accept the decision.

In mediation, they can come up with a compromise both sides are willing to agree on.

Mediation is expected to continue through Wednesday.
