Ala Wai Boulevard re-opens after water main break

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The repaving work is done, and Ala Wai Boulevard is now completely open to traffic. The road had been closed since early Thursday morning, when a water main ruptured about 3:45 AM.

Repairs took longer than expected, because when the break happened, it damaged both a 16-inch and 8-inch main where they connected.  The water buckled the road, and damaged a gas line nearby.

Crews finally finished repairs Thursday night, and preliminary repaving early Friday morning.

A contractor finished up the job and was able to reopen the road between Namahana and Pau streets. The road opened at around 1:00 PM Friday.

"We'd like to thank all motorists and water customers, who were impacted by this complex repair job, for their patience as our crews and our paving contractor worked as quickly as possible to restore water service and the roadway" said Tracy Burgo, spokesperson for the Board of Water Supply.
