  • 2 pieces Chuck flat or boneless beef ribs
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoon Chinese five spice
  • salt
  • Salad oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, medium dice
  • 1/2 cup carrots, medium dice
  • 1/2 cup celery, medium dice
  • 2 tablespoons ginger, sliced
  • 8 pieces whole, peeled garlic cloves
  • 6 pieces star anis
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • water

Remove chuck flat from packaging, and pat dry with paper towel. Mix flour with five spice and salt, dredge the meat in the flour mixture on all sides, brown in a heavy bottom skillet over medium heat until well browned on all sides. Place in a heavy crock pot and add the rest of the ingredients and enough water to cover the meat. Simmer slowly on stovetop or in the oven at 350 degrees for about 3 hours. Meat should brake apart when testing for doneness. Remove meat from crock pot and place in refrigerator until firm enough to cut. Strain the cooking liquid into a saucepot, skim off fat and reduce until right consistency. Adjust seasoning. Re-heat the meat with some of the sauce and serve with mashed potato and fresh sautéed vegetables.
