Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - Each year, HONOLULU Magazine honors the best restaurants in the Islands with a gala reception and celebration. Hundreds of Hawai'i's best chefs and restaurateurs will gather to learn in what award they have won. The annual Hale 'Aina Awards are announced for the first time at this gala celebration before they are published in the January issue of HONOLULU Magazine. The event culminates with a large celebration where the award-winning restaurants mix together with readers and guests and are treated to some of the finest fare from their award-winning peers. It invites all guests to EAT, DRINK, MINGLE and REPEAT, which is the HONOLULU Magazine recipe for a good time.

This year's event will feature eight award-winning restaurants serving selections in a grazing format on the Ocean Lawn (all were Hale 'Aina Award Gold level winners this past year):

  • Alan Wong's Honolulu - Braised Short Ribs, Foie Gras Pepper Sauce, Potato Gratin
  • Cheesecake Factory - The Original Cheesecake and Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake
  • Formaggio Wine Bar & Grill - Seared Polenta Cake with Winter Pumpkin Ratatouille and Pumpkin Seed Pesto
  • Hoku's at the Kahala Hotel & Resort - Izakaya Style Menu:
  • Mariposa - Kamuela tomato crusted moi, squid ink risotto, pancetta, beet greens & lilikoi brown butter
  • Orchids at the Halekulani - Kahuku Shrimp Ravioli - Shimeji mushrooms, parmesan sauce, ogo salad
  • Roy's Restaurant - Roy's Chocolate Souffle with Raspberry Sauce
  • Tangö Contemporary CafĂ© - Asian style five spiced braised beef, mashed potato, chili fried onion rings

The event offers foodies an opportunity to try out some of the best restaurants in Hawai'i and mingle with our finest chefs in a fun and festive atmosphere.

Hawai'i's top beverage distributors will present a selection of sophisticated beverages including fine wines, sake and spirits, beer from Steinlager Pure, water from Glaceau smartwater and vitaminwater and Koa Coffee Plantation coffees.

Guests can also enjoy entertainment from Rocky Brown in the Monarch Ballroom with emcees Frank B. Shaner and Mandy from KUMU Lite 94.7 FM.

The 26th annual Hale 'Aina Awards will also feature a silent auction featuring a number of amazing food and travel packages. Packages include a number of dining certificates, a chance to experience the fish auction, hotel packages locally and abroad or even an experience eating out with HONOLULU Magazine dining columnist John Heckathorn. 100% of the funds raised from the Hale 'Aina Awards silent auction will go to furthering the mission of the Hale 'Aina 'Ohana to provide support for the development and promotion of culinary training programs at the University of Hawai'i Community Colleges throughout the State.

The awards will be announced for the first time earlier that night at a special VIP Reception and Awards Presentation for the award-winning restaurants and event sponsors. Guests will be treated to delicious selections from chef Jon Matsubara of AZURE Restaurant, chef Alan Takasaki of Le Bistro and chef Peter Merriman of Merriman's Waimea. The awards presentation will be live streamed via www.honolulumagazine.com for the first time that night.

About the Hale Aina Awards:

In 1984, HONOLULU Magazine established its Hale 'Aina Awards as the Islands' first local restaurant awards. Before then, culinary awards in the Islands had been given by Mainland travel interests. The Hale 'Aina Awards were the first to recognize local tastes. Over the past 25 years, the Hale 'Aina Awards have been much imitated, but they still stand out, as the most prized dining awards in the Islands.

All HONOLULU readers are eligible to vote. Voting takes place over the summer (June, July, August) online. A hard copy ballot also appears in the August issue each year. After the ballots are tallied, the magazine designates its readers' favorite restaurants as Hale 'Aina Award winners for that year. Hale 'Aina means "eating place." It is the closest Hawaiian equivalent to the word restaurant. But Hale 'Aina has come to mean the most prestigious dining awards in the Islands. They act as a guide to readers about where to eat, they bolster a restaurant's reputation and they have been publicized all over the Mainland and Japan.
