Business Report: Hawaii Public Radio

HONOLULU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - Hawaii Public Radio has ended its fall pledge drive and returned to normal programming. After a couple scary slow days, the ten-day drive ended on schedule Friday afternoon with a surge of contributions. So many people were already on the phone when the goal was met that they overshot by more than 9 grand, raising more than $770.000 to operate until spring.

HPR gets two thirds of its revenue from these twice-yearly fundraising drives. Almost 800 new members were recruited including more than 200 from neighbor islands. If HPR can do the same thing next spring it will be up to about 3,000 members. HPR is an independent nonprofit with no government or academic connections, operating two programs streams on Oahu as well as stations on Maui and the Big Island.
