Flash flooding at Waikane Bridge

WAIKANE (KHNL) - Heavy rains over Windward Oahu on Sunday made for treacherous driving conditions, leaving many stuck in the mud.

A downpour caused the Waikane Stream to overflow in the afternoon, forcing the closure of the Waikane Bridge.

Firefighters arrived around 3:00 p.m. after getting a call about cars underwater.

A helicopter scoped out the stream, but rescuers did not find anyone in distress.

Crews determined the cars may have been abandoned there long ago.

The Honolulu Fire Department reported that no one was hurt, and there was no property damaged.

The section of Kamehameha Highway near the Waikane Bridge re-opened by 5:00 p.m.
