HONOLULU (KHNL) - A Waipahu man, accused of stabbing his wife over the weekend, appeared before an Oahu judge Tuesday.

Herminio Sol, 64, is charged with attempted murder. Family members say he recently underwent surgery for prostate cancer and may have been overwhelmed by mounting medical bills.

According to court documents, the suspect's daughter told police she "heard a commotion and awoke to see her mother, Mary Grace Sol, laying in a pool of blood on the floor of the bedroom."

A responding officer says he found "Herminio Sol sitting on the bed with blood on his hands and clothes."

"He never was a violent man, so I don't understand. My whole family doesn't understand why it happened," Donna Swallow, suspect's niece, said through tears. "He did it and, hopefully, he can get whatever help he needs now."

Sol's preliminary hearing will be held Thursday, unless a grand jury indicts him before then.
