Ann Kobayashi returns to Honolulu City Council with special election victory

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Former Honolulu City Councilmember Ann Kobayashi is back! She emerged the clear winner Friday night in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the late Duke Bainum.

Kobayashi won 37 percent of the vote. Former state senator Matt Matsunaga came in second, and rounding out the top three is newcomer Nathaniel Kinney.

Kobayashi's campaign celebrated.14 candidates were in the race for a chance to represent the Ala Moana and Manoa area. Voters cast their ballots via mail and the office of elections tallied the votes this evening.

Kobayashi vows to continue the legacy Bainum left behind. She will fill out the remaining three-plus years on Bainum's term, and is eligible to run for two more consecutive four-year terms
