HONOLULU (KHNL) - The Honolulu Police Department is also receiving a big boost.

Sen. Daniel Inouye announced today, HPD will get more than $5 million, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

It will be used to hire 21 officers, providing them with salary and benefits for 3 years.

HPD Chief Boisse Correa says, the money, will go a long way.

"We have 50 vacancies at this time, 275 officers ready to retire and we're facing an economic shortfall so we had to cut back on our recruiting," said Correa.

The money is part of a $1 billion grant, being distributed to more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies, in all 50 states.
