LIHUE, Kauai (KHNL) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting on Kauai, but victims in this case are a pair of horses. Something unusual happened Thursday morning when Ben Ellsworth got up to take care of a pair of horses locked up at their Garden Island pasture.

"My husband noticed the old horse Earl laying down in the pasture, the young horse walked up with a bullet hole in his face, so he immediately knew something had happened to the old horse," said Andrea Ellsworth.

Earl, a retired rope horse, was dead. Police, animal control and vets were called in and they discovered the bullets had come from a high powered rifle. Buddy, a horse the Ellsworths had since his birth, is expected to recover from his injury, but has a very visible reminder of the shooting.

"Right now he has a sizeable hole in his face; he sounds like Darth Vader when he breathes."

The shooting not only killed a prized horse, but also shattered the quiet sense of security in this community on Kauai.

"My husband goes out every night and friends patrol and everyone is on guard and questions everyone they see," said Ellsworth.

The Kauai Humane Society is offering a $10,000 reward for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of the shooter. If you have any information in this attack, call Kauai police.
