HONOLULU (KHNL) - A man, convicted in the fatal beating of another man outside a Honolulu bar five years ago, was sentenced to a year in jail Monday.

Before receiving his punishment, Ulutunu Faumuina, Jr. apologized to the victim's mother.

The 28-year-old was charged with murder. But in April, a jury found him guilty of third-degree assault, which is a misdemeanor.

Prosecutors say he and a co-defendant beat Mikiala Kahalewai, 26, to death because he urinated in Faumuina's truck.

"I will never see my son, hold my son, or receive kisses and love from him anymore," Melvamay Kahalewai, victim's mother, said through tears.

"I am truly sorry for all the pain and suffering that I caused you," Faumuina said. "All I can do is just pray, and may the Lord help you to ease your pain."

The one-year jail term is the maximum punishment for misdemeanor assault.
