HONOLULU (KHNL) - An Oahu man, charged with attempting to murder his infant daughter, was convicted of a lesser offense Friday.

A jury of eight men and four women found Pulumataala Eli guilty of attempted manslaughter.

Prosecutors say Eli hit his baby and threw her around during an argument with his girlfriend in a van parked at Ala Moana Beach Park. They say seven-month-old Alice suffered permanent brain damage.

Attempted manslaughter carries a 20-year prison sentence. But prosecutors plan to seek the extended term of life in prison, citing the victim's young age and Eli's prior criminal record.

The hearing is set for November.
