HONOLULU (KHNL) - A nursing aide, accused of sexually assaulting three elderly women at a senior living complex in Kahala, made his first court appearance Friday.
Mark Genetiano's family members are stunned by the allegations. They say he's a hard-working caregiver, who recently obtained a license to run his own foster home.
The sight of his son in a police custody jumpsuit is more than Modesto Genetiano can bear.
"It's very painful for us to see him," the suspect's father said.
Mark Genetiano, 24, is charged with six counts of sex assault. He's accused of fondling two 92-year-old women and an 89-year-old woman at the Kahala Nui retirement community.
"We can not sleep," Joan Flores, suspect's sister, said through tears. "We can not even eat because we never expected this to happen."
Court papers say all three elderly women have dementia and are unable to recall anything, but that other nursing aides witnessed the alleged assaults.
One aide told police "she observed Genetiano holding down (the woman's) arms with his left hand and pinching (her) bare left nipple with his right hand." The aide says the woman "was yelling 'stop' and 'leave me alone'" and that "Genetiano was laughing the entire time."
"It's really unbelievable because we know, it's not just because we're relatives of him, but we know his character as a person that he can not do that," Flores said through tears.
Family members say they can't believe he would do anything to jeopardize the job he loves. Flores spoke with her brother after his arrest.
"He said, oh, tell everybody that I'm okay over here," she recalled. "But I can see him. He's so scared. Tears were dropping."
Genetiano remains in custody, unable to post $250,000 bail.
"The whole night last night, I couldn't sleep," Modesto Genetiano said.
