HONOLULU (KHNL) - A former Leilehua High School football standout, accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting his estranged girlfriend, pleaded guilty to reduced charges Friday.

Rico Newman, 19, will likely avoid prison time after pleading guilty to unlawful imprisonment and domestic abuse.

Prosecutors say the victim has since married the defendant, is expecting their second child and is refusing to cooperate. They say the plea deal holds the running back accountable, while allowing him to go to college, attend parenting classes and support his young family.

Newman is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
