Vog: Hawaii in Crisis

HONOLULU (KHNL) - KHNL News 8 and K5 News travel to the Big Island to present a special series of reports on the hazardous effects of "vog" to our island state.  Topics include critical health issues, agricultural and financial challenges and the battle against this dangerous natural phenomenon.

"We feel the effects of vog here on Oahu, but to really understand the problem, we needed to hear from the people on the Big Island," said KHNL/KFVE assistant news director Rich Meiers. "And we'll show viewers how this truly is a crisis situation, not only for Hawaii island, but for our entire state."

From Hilo to Kona, from Ka'u to Waimea, there is a critical vog story to be told.  KHNL News 8 and K5 News producer Anthony Ferreira, who hails from the Big Island, takes a personal approach to these stories.

"There is a hospital without air conditioning, schools with vog monitoring, a flower farm that is struggling to stay in business and evidence to show that conditions are worsening," said Ferreira.  "But we will also show what steps are being taken to improve things and how some farms can thrive if they change the way they do business."

Special reports will air on KHNL News 8 at 5, 6 and 10 PM and K5 News at 6:30 and 9 PM starting Monday June 15 through Friday June 19.
