MANOA (KHNL) - He led all Rainbow baseball starters in batting average, runs and walks, so it's no surprise Vinnie Catricala is the first player with Hawaii ties to go in the 2009 Major League baseball draft.
The Seattle Mariners picked up the junior third baseman in the 10th round with the 293rd overall pick, making him the highest UH draftee since Steven Wright in 2006.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Spangler was also selected in today's rounds.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 20th round with the 595th pick.
Other players with Hawaii ties selected in the draft:
UH recruit Kirk Wetmore in the 11th round by Cleveland.
Pearl City grads Bryson Namba and Carlton Tanabe.
Namba in the 12th by Toronto, Tanabe in the 24th by Seatle.
Plus, the Chicago White Sox picked St. Louis alum Cameron Bayne in the 13th round.
