MANOA (KHNL) - For a 2nd straight year, Rainbow Wahine track and field coach Carmyn James is taking the same three athletes back to the National Championships.

Two are now seniors, while one is a sophomore, and they all come from different parts of the world. Heptathlete Annett Wichmann is from Germany, high jumper Emily Sheppard is from Canada, and Amber Kaufman is from California.

And since they're all far from home, they've all found strength in each other, and from their coach.

"We're like a big family, we all go out to dinner together, we get pretty close around this time of year and we spend so much time together and it's just us. So we're definitely like a family, and Carmyn is like a mother to us," said Kaufman.

"She has always supported us and was always there when we needed something even though it had nothing to do with track. I'm just really grateful to have her in my life the last four years," said Wichmann.

The Wahine leave for Fayetteville, Arkansas on Sunday. Competition begins on Wednesday and runs through next Saturday.
