Various Matters

A few thoughts to ponder, if you care...

Is it just me, or does that huge golf ball-looking, radar-tracking thing seem to be docked here just about every other week?  I'm not sure how effective the device is, especially since its time out at seas seems to be limited, but it sure does make me wanna hit the links when I see it perched atop its tee when docked here.

Discussion continues about the legality and value of having drug-sniffing dogs on school campuses.  Would the same dogs be allowed to sniff around teacher lockers and storage places?  I don't know if any of this is fair or would be a deterrent, but the whole idea of testing teachers for drugs and conducting student locker searches suggests that there is a real lack of trust in the old schoolyard.  Perhaps it's because some people- kids and adults- have made this an issue in the first place.

As overall revenues and tax numbers continue to come in lower than projected on a regular basis, maybe it's time to change the formula being used to predict these things.  It might be hard to be real accurate with the variables involved in this economy, but if you talk to major stakeholders in the business community and realize that the more optimistic projections simply haven't been coming to fruition, it might make it easier to better predict these late $100- and $200-million shortfalls which, in turn, would allow more time for planning the onerous cuts.  Think about it...
