MANOA (KHNL) - The NCAA Track & Field West Regional kicked off on Friday and seven Rainbow Wahine will participate in four different events: The high jump, javelin, pole vault and discus.
This is the 7th regional appearance for Hawaii, but it'll be the first for true freshman Kai Schmidt. Schmidt, who competes in the javelin, didn't have a regional qualifying performance all season until the WAC championship, but she always believed, she could make it.
"Coming in I knew the regional qualifying from last year and so I knew I was close, so if I just got a little further, I could make it, but it's definitely very exciting. I would like to throw 45 meters, but we'll see, maybe Nationals junior or senior year, but as a freshman I think just Regionals is good," said Schmidt.
Schmidt and Annett Wichmann both compete in the javelin tomorrow afternoon, as do the athletes competing in the high jump.
As for Friday's results, senior pole vaulter Jessica Custance cleared 3.66 meters, but couldn't get over the 3.81 mark. Freshman Terina Keenan finished 14th with a discus throw of 47.36 meters, while sophomore Careena Onosai placed 22nd with a 44 meter throw.
Only the top five finishers automatically advance to Nationals.
