HONOLULU (KHNL) - There were tense moments outside an Oahu school Thursday, after a car plowed into two children.

It happened on Queen Emma Street near Central Intermediate just before 8 am. Police say the two girls were using a crosswalk.

One went to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The other left the scene in serious condition. Police say both students have since improved.

Investigators don't believe alcohol played a role in the crash, but say they still took the female driver to get tested.

"They're not in custody," Lt. Darren Izumo, Honolulu Police Department, said. "At this time, they're not under arrest for any kind of offense, but there's a law on the books that gives us that right to ask for a blood draw."

Investigators don't believe speed was a factor.

People who work nearby say they have seen other accidents on the busy roadway.
