MANOA (KHNL) - Monday was a holiday for most people, but when you're trying to make it to a national championship, there's no such thing as a day off. Just ask the Rainbow Wahine track and field team.

This weekend seven members will compete in the NCAA West Regionals in Oregon, for a chance to advance to nationals.

The team is coming off a record setting performance at the WAC outdoor championship two weeks ago, and they're preparing for the same type of results entering the final stretch.

"We're really looking for an outstanding performance at the regionals, our athletes are really good at rising to the occasion, who knows, it won't be the same three going to nationals, who knows, we could have four or maybe even five," said head coach Carmyn James.

"I think all seven of us that are going really have high hopes, and we have good potential as a team, we have some good seniors and we have a few freshman which are going too, which is really exciting," said freshman thrower Kai Schmidt.

The team leaves for the mainland on Wednesday, and will compete on Friday and Saturday.
