KANEOHE BAY (KHNL) - The U.S. Marines honored one of its own Friday afternoon, renaming a section of Marine Corps Base Hawaii after a trailblazing hero.

The Marine Corps Air Facility is now called the Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in honor of Maj. Gen. Marion Carl. He was a decorated officer, who became the first Marine to down ten enemy aircraft at the battle of Guadalcanal during World War II.

Friday military members, dignitaries, and his family came to honor the two-star general.

"I'm happy and proud to be my father's son," said Bruce Carl. "I'm proud to be here, happy to accept this award for him as far as renaming the airfield for him."

The Marine Corps marching band took part in the ceremonies. Maj. Gen. Carl was twice awarded the Navy Cross. He died in 1998 at the age of 82.
