HONOLULU (KHNL) - A young man, whose actions led to the death of a Good Samaritan in Waikiki, begged for leniency at his sentencing Monday.

Ben Pada, 19, admits he tried to steal a purse from a woman in Waikiki last year. The woman's boyfriend, however, chased him down.

Video, taken by a bystander, shows the pair fighting.

Ned Nakoa, 58, went over and tried to calm the situation. Pada's friend beat Nakoa, who later died.

Pada apologized to the victim's family, then asked the judge for probation instead of prison.

"I never mean for anybody get hurt and I am sorry for your loss, I truly am, and I hope you guys can forgive me," he said. "Your honor, I just ask that you please give me one chance."

Pada also assaulted a guard at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility.

Circuit Judge Steven Alm sentenced him to 15 years in prison for both cases.
