HONOLULU (KHNL) - A man accused of a violent purse-snatching in Kakaako made his initial court appearance in the case Friday.

John Leonard Gomes, 39, is charged with robbery. His bail is set at $50,000.

Investigators say a 34-year-old woman was in a parking structure on Ilaniwai Street, when a man hit her with an object that resembled a pipe or stick, and then took off with her purse.

Billy Essex, Everard Yee and Cory Hashizume were working nearby at Island Fender, and chased down the fleeing suspect.

Gomes' preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
