KAIMUKI (KHNL) - Remember that puppy that was stolen from a pet store and returned the following day? Well that happy ending now has a happier ending.

Monday, the pet store manager thanked KHNL/K5 for helping to bring that puppy back. Well, a woman who recently lost her dog, saw our broadcast and the rest, as they say, is history.

Danielle Kaneshiro has had a rollercoaster of a week. The Pet's Discount store manager was in tears right after this 10-week old puppy was stolen on Thursday.

"I'm asking you to please call me, call any store, any Pet's Discount, Pet's Central, and just bring the puppy back," said Kaneshiro on Friday. "That's all we're asking."

Then she was all smiles after the people who had the puppy, brought her back after watching our broadcast.

"I just wanted to say actually to you, Leland," said Kaneshiro on Monday. "Thank you for being so compassionate towards us and coming immediately when we asked to help in finding the puppy."

Well, Paula Burgess happened to have her TV on when the segment aired.

"I saw your show on the news last night and saw the puppy," said the 62-year-old woman. "And I've been looking to replace the one I lost last October."

Chai was a Dachshund/Terrier mix, just like the puppy that was stolen.

"I just really feel good about it because I need the puppy as much as she needs me right now," said Burgess.

Soon after Chai passed away, Burgess' mom got sick.

"She was bedridden and my mom said, 'I want you to get a new puppy as a birthday present for yourself.' And she passed away about a month later," said Burgess. "So it's kind of like my mom wanted me to have her, too."

So the saga of the stolen puppy has a fairy "tail" ending.

"It's emotional with everything this store's been through with her, it's bittersweet," said Kaneshiro. "It's time to say goodbye and she needs and she deserves a good home. And Mrs. Burgess is going to give her that good home."

And it already looks like the puppy is warming up to her new mommy.

"Where's your mommy? Where's your mommy?" asked Kaneshiro as the puppy started kissing Burgess. "That's right. That's your mommy. That's your mommy."

Burgess thought about naming the puppy "Channel 8," but realized it wasn't going to stick. She's still looking for a permanent name for the new addition to her family.
