HONOLULU (KHNL) - An elderly man accused of killing his neighbor, in what the victim's friends say is a case of unrequited love, is scheduled to appear before an Oahu judge Wednesday.

Authorities on Tuesday charged Melvin Yoshida, 70, with murder and a firearms offense. Investigators say he fatally shot Clare Silva, 54, in her apartment at Punchbowl Homes Sunday.

The victim's friends say the suspect had been pursuing Silva since his wife died about a year ago.

According to a police affidavit, Yoshida told a responding officer, "I shot Clare Silva. I was going to kill her then myself but I don't have the guts to shoot myself."

Bail is set at $100,000.
