HONOLULU (KHNL) - It seems like you can't let a day go by without hearing about Facebook.

The social networking site is taking the world by storm, and is popular with teens and young adults.

But surprisingly, its popularity is growing most quickly among a different group -- women who are older than 55. Kitty Lagareta falls in that category. She serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Communications Pacific.

"You know, I'm in the communications business and it's an entire world of communications that you need to pay attention to and a lot of my staff said, you should get on," she said.

Now it allows her to keep in touch with contacts, clients and employees.

"In addition, I talk to my grandchildren, they post photos, my kids check in if they see that I'm online during the day because they live on the Mainland and they'll say hey mom, what's up, what are you doing?" she said.

There are about 1.5 million female users older than 55 on the site. That's a 550% increase over the past six months. People like Lagareta enjoy being more connected to friends, family and colleagues. But sometimes, things get a little too close for comfort.

"One of the first people who contacted me was my high school boyfriend who I hadn't heard from in over 38 years," she said. "And then a guy from rotary announced he had a Brazilian wax".

But she doesn't have any regrets.

"I'm so glad I did it, in fact I was just talking to my mom over the weekend and she's in her 70's and I was convincing her that she needs to be on Facebook," she said.
