HONOLULU (KHNL) - A man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in Ewa earlier this week appeared before an Oahu judge Friday.
Toi Nofoa, 31, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and two firearms offenses. Bail is set at $4 million.
He faces the first-degree murder charge because the victim, Royal Kaukani, 25, was supposed to be a witness at his kidnapping and terroristic threatening trial this month. It's the state's most serious offense and, if convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Nofoa is accused of gunning her down in the middle of a street in broad daylight Tuesday. Officers arrested him in Waimanalo after a seven-hour manhunt.
According to court papers released Friday, the suspect confessed to his aunt. She says Nofoa told her, "he couldn't believe what he just did...that he shot her."
She also told investigators, "he just kept crying...and he said that he was going to kill himself."
