HONOLULU (KHNL) -- This weekend, the state's most talented students will gather for the annual Brown Bags to Stardom competition.

And it's not just an ordinary talent show. It's helped a bunch of local musicians.

In this edition of "where are they now," we catch up with one of them. A Kauai boy who won the show more than 20 years ago and became an international star.

Glenn Medeiros was just 16 years old, when he won the Brown Bags contest with the song "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You."

It made it into the top 10 in the U.S. and hit number one in numerous other countries. Other hits followed, as he released 7 records. And now?

"I'm teaching of course, at Maryknoll High School and I'm teaching history which is something I've always wanted to do," he said.

He also works part-time at St. Joseph's in Waipahu and at the University of Phoenix. He also teaches voice lessons on the weekends.

You might think he misses those days in the international spotlight, but, he doesn't.

"The lifestyle was very difficult. From hotel room to hotel room. One club to another club, the late nights, it was a tough life and some people enjoy that lifestyle," he said.

Medeiros does have one regret.

"The offices telling me, you have to do this style of music, or else you're not going to have a record deal. And I remember thinking to myself, but I don't want to do this type of music. But because I had a house payment to make, bills to pay for, I had to do it," he said.

Now, the 38-year-old performer does things, on his own terms, recently writing a song to honor Father Damien. You can also find him singing twice a week at the Hale Koa Hotel.

He also enjoys spending time with his wife Tammy of 12 years and their children, Chord and Lyric.

"So I feel happy now, probably happier than when I was singing" he said.
