HONOLULU (KHNL) - A groundbreaking ceremony took place in Kalaeloa Friday morning for a new Ke Kama Pono (Children of Promise) safe home.
The residence will provide a nurturing and highly structured environment for up to 12 troubled, nonviolent teenage boys.
Human Services Director Lillian Koller says the teens who will stay at this home are not bad kids but had made bad choices.
"This means they have reached a critical juncture in their young lives, " said Koller. "They need the support and guidance of well-trained adult supervisors so they will succeed in school, prepare for college and careers and realize their potential."
Based on the success of the first Ke Kama Pono home, which opened in 2005 at Honokaa on the Big Island for teenage girls, the state is now expanding the program for boys in Wailuku on Maui, Captain Cook in West Hawaii and Kalaeloa on Oahu.
All three homes will open in 2009.
