Vog blankets the Aloha state for third straight day

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Drivers had their headlights on during the morning commute, not because of cloudy, dark skies, but because of thick vog.

The view of Diamond Head on Oahu isn't the one you'll find on postcards. Vog blankets the state for the third day in a row.

With no end in sight from the eruption that began in March at Halemaumau Crater, as long as the winds shift to a more southerly direction, the view will be voggy here in paradise.

Nano Morales takes his tour group to this scenic overlook. High levels of sulfur dioxide cloud the view.

"My people are a little disappointed because of the vog so I've been explaining to my people that this is not pollution this is gasses from the volcano, Kilauea," Morales said.

Some avid exercisers don't let the vog get in the way of their daily routine.

"I since a couple days ago the vog was like this and because I'm used to working out I don't care, it doesn't matter to me," runner Emma Prakoso said.

The effects vog has on humans, animals, and nature is still unknown.

"It doesn't bother me too much but when it's more than two or three days it kind of gets to you because it's like your missing something, your missing the real beauty of Hawaii," Morales said.

The beauty of Hawaii will return Wednesday with the trade winds.
