HONOLULU (KHNL) - One of Hawaii's oldest Filipino organizations is shipping much needed medical supplies to the Philippines.

Erwin Gabrillo knows all too well how much Philippine hospitals desperately need these supplies. It was while he was on a medical mission when he noticed many hospitals there lacked equipment.

He also met with many people who couldn't afford to get treatment.

"We know how hard the economy there is hard and we know that we need to lend a hand to them," he said.

Combined with natural disasters like this typhoon and rough economic times, Hawaii's filipino community has decided it's time to step in to help their friends and family there.

"You can see it's really important to them and you can see the appreciation every time that the harder we put we feel that it's worth it," he said.

This isn't the first time they've donated medical equipment to the Philippines, but every time they do it, they have the same type of feeling of gratitude.

"I'm happy we were able to get all these things," Volunteer Richard Ancog said. "The hospitals willing to give us their old stuff instead of throwing it in the garbage, they give it to us and we knew that in the Phillipines, they could use it really good."

A use that goes a long way from generation to generation.

"Like me, I'm a local boy, but I grew up down there and I know how the people, the town need all this equipment," Ancog said.

They're lending a hand to help people in desperate need.

Most of the medical supplies came from local hospitals and ones from the west coast. some of the donated equipment includes mammogram machines, hospital beds, wheelchairs and X-ray machines.
