Sam Choy's on Kapahulu to close

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Popular island chef Sam Choy is down sizing his restaurants, turning two into one.  He announced Friday the Sam Choy's Diamond Head location on Kapahulu Avenue will be closing Sunday, June 29.

Employees from the Kapahulu restaurant will be offered jobs at Choy's family style restaurant on Nimitz Highway.

The Nimitz restaurant currently known as "Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab and Big Aloha Brewery" will be renamed "Sam Choy's."

Choy also plans on making some other changes.

"We are planning to introduce a new dinner menu at the Nimitz location, which will also include some of our most popular Hawaiian regional cuisine style dishes," he said.  "The restaurant plans to undergo a renovation in the fall."

The decision to merge the two restaurants was to cut costs, Choy said.

"Expenses are going up and we thought it would be best to consolidate the locations," he added.

All gift cards from the Kapahulu restaurant will be honored at the Nimitz location.

Choy is still deciding on whether or not to try a new concept at the Kapahulu location.
