WAIKIKI (KHNL) -- The sights and sounds of hula brought the young and the old and kamaaina and visitors to the Kapiolani Park Bandstand on a day filled with aloha.
"This is our first may day event," said Canadian visitor John Hendrix. "We're looking forward to this exciting time in Hawaii."
Lei Day is always special here in the islands, but this will be one to remember.
On this 81st annual Lei Day, hundreds came together to be a part of a record-breaking event.
One by one they proudly held up the world's longest fresh flower lei for all to see.
"We went over a mile!" said Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman (D-Honolulu).
It's one thing to see the gigantic lei from the ground, it's another to see it by air.
"When that helicopter is flying over head, I want you to wave because that image is going to be seen around the world!" said Mayor Hanneman.
Chopper 8 captured exclusive video of a sight Guiness Book officials have to see to believe.
The lei is more than a mile long and circles more than half of the largest public park in the state.
"The camera is still here and rolling ladies and gentlemen!" said the emcee at the event. "You still have a chance to look up and smile."
"I'm very happy we're going to be in the Guiness Book of World Records," said Mayor Hanneman. "A lot of people participated to make this happen and it's another great cultural achievement for the people of Honolulu."
Everyone who came has high hopes once Guiness Book of World Records officials see this, it will be official, and Hawaii will have a title we can all be proud of.
"Put down the lei for it to be measured! Put down the lei! Mahalo everyone for showing up!"
