Daiei Selling its Four Hawaii Stores

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii's four remaining Daiei stores are being bought by a Tokyo retailer.

Daiei says it will sell the stores to discount retail chain Don Quijote Corporation.

Don Quijote sells everything from groceries to home appliances and luxury fashions in about 100 stores in Japan.

Daiei spokeswoman Theresa Chang says customers should expect business to be the same at the store until early next year.

But she says she doesn't know how operations would change when Don Quijote takes over.

Mitsuo Takahashi is Don Quijote's senior managing director.

He says the company plans to spend about eight million dollars to renovate the stores in Hawaii.

Takahashi says the stores would be similar to Daiei.

Daiei said it was selling the island stores to focus on core operations.

A sale price has not been disclosed.
