HONOLULU (AP) -
Hawaii's senior senator introduced legislation in Congress Thursday to help address the tons and tons of trash accumulating in the oceans.
Senator Daniel Inouye and Alaska Senator Ted Stevens teamed up to introduce the Marine Debris Research and Reduction Act.
The goal of the bill is to research the sources of ocean trash, the potential threats and ways to reduce the amount washing up on our shores.
The debris includes everything from basic trash to nets and other discarded fishing gear.
Inouye notes that the problem is particularly bad in Hawaii -- especially the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
Because of the currents in the Pacific, a whirlpool effect
brings trash discarded thousands of miles away to the uninhabited
islands.
