PAPAILOA POINT (HawaiiNewsNow) - The search for a missing surfer in waters off Oahu's North Shore resumed briefly Thursday after the California man's shorts washed ashore.

After calling off the operation Wednesday night, fire rescue crews returned to Papailoa Point Thursday morning after a person walking on the beach discovered a tattered pair of black shorts.

"We expected that last night was going to be the conclusion unless there was new information and that's exactly what happened," Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department, said.

Search teams scoured the shoreline for any sign of the missing surfer after a woman made the grim discovery.

"The shorts were confirmed to have been the surfer's," Seelig said. "Now, there's strong evidence to indicate that he's not going to be found. However, we're going to still look."

The 35-year-old visitor from California went surfing at nearby Laniakea Beach Tuesday and didn't return.

Fire officials say their crews spotted a body near three tiger sharks Wednesday, and quickly lost sight of it. Lifeguards immediately posted shark warning signs, but removed them just before noon Thursday.

"Ocean Safety is now playing a major role in the water," Seelig said as lifeguards on watercraft combed the area. "Before they couldn't. None of us could because of the shark warning."

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii is continuing to assist the man's family.

"This is a very, very difficult situation," Seelig said. "Of course, we feel very badly for the family of the surfer."
