MAILI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A teen accused of savagely beating an elderly woman in Leeward Oahu made his first court appearance in the case Monday. Nico McLean, 18, is charged with robbery and burglary.
The victim is 68 years old, is barely 5' tall, and weighs about 85 lbs. But she says she is strong and ready to testify against her attacker.
Teresita Pascua still has stitches on her face and bruising on her body, 13 days after being beaten at her own home in Maili.
"I want to get the guy who did this to me," the feisty 68-year-old said.
"You're such a strong lady," this reporter remarked.
"You have to be," the beating victim said.
Pascua identified McLean as the one who approached her in her carport, looking for someone who owed him money.
"I said there's nobody here, you know, that lives over here and he kept insisting, cussing me out and all that," Pascua said.
The suspect is accused of attacking the elderly woman from behind, when she turned to go inside her house. Pascua lost consciousness and woke up on a chair in her living room covered with blood.
"My sinuses were all broken, my left cheek, my nose," she said. "So what they did was they plated up (my forehead), and my nose is being held by plates."
Police say nothing was taken from the home.
Nearly two weeks later, Pascua remains frustrated that she can't recall the actual beating.
"Just trying to remember is making me crazy," she said. "Nothing comes back."
With her husband, Henry, 75, firmly at her side, Pascua is ready to seek justice.
"I'm somewhat satisfied now that things are progressing and they arrested a suspect," Henry Pascua, victim's husband, said.
"There's no respect anymore for the elderly people," Teresita Pascua said. "That's what really gets me."
A neighbor reported seeing four teens running from the area, but investigators still haven't located any other suspects.
Pascua is preparing to testify before an Oahu grand jury on Wednesday.
McLean's bail is set at $25,000.
