KAENA POINT (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead after a rental car plunged off a cliff and burst into flames in Leeward Oahu Saturday night.
A passer-by reported seeing a car parked on the mauka side of Farrington Highway near Satellite Tracking Center Road. About 10 minutes later, that same witness returned to the area and saw flames coming from below the cliff near the ocean.
Police say a 2009 Nissan Altima went over a cliff, smashed into the rocks some 30 feet below, landed upside down, and burst into flames. Emergency crews pulled the driver from the wreckage, but the person was burned beyond recognition and died at the scene.
The four-door vehicle, which is owned by Enterprise Rent-a-Car, now sits at a tow yard in Waianae. Investigators are still trying to determine why the car left the roadway.
This is the ninth traffic fatality on Oahu this year.
