HAWAII KAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - City Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services personnel along with the City Department of Parks and Recreation decided Monday to close Hanauma Bay for a second day due to a high number of box jellyfish being found.
In less than an hour, more than 100 box jellyfish were found on the beach at Hanauma Bay Monday with countless more spotted floating just offshore. A smaller number of box jellyfish were also found at Yokohama Beach in leeward Oahu, Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Beach Park so warning signs have been posted.
"We would like to apologize to the public for the inconvenience but due to the potential risk to public safety the City's Parks and Recreation Department along with the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division made the decision to close the bay effective at 7:30 AM," said Bryan Cheplic, Public Information Officer for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.
This is the second day that Hanauma Bay has been closed due to the box jellyfish influx. In less than an hour Sunday, more than 40 box jellyfish were found on the beach at Hanauma Bay with numerous amounts more floating just offshore. In addition, more than 400 box jellyfish were also found on Yokohama Beach Sunday.
