Fleeing driver crashes causing massive North Shore traffic jam

WAIMEA BAY (HawaiiNewsNow) - An attempted murder investigation shut down traffic on the North Shore of Oahu for several hours Wednesday.

It started when police tried to pull over a speeding car near Haleiwa, but the driver refused to stop.

An officer later spotted the 24 year old suspect in the parking lot at Waimea Bay Beach Park. The officer blocked the exit with her car.

The man tried to escape by driving onto the grass and then, according to police, tried to run-down the officer with his car. He missed her but hit a pick-up truck, smashed into the sign at the entrance to the park, and then crashed into a Handi-Van on Kamehameha Highway fronting the park.

The suspect's car was badly damaged and stalled. He was arrested for attempted murder of a police officer.

The Handi-Van driver was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police shut down the road in both directions from about 11 AM until just after 3 PM.
