Mauro Martin OrtizHONOLULU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - June 21, 2008. Authorities say an underage girl living in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna was raped, allegedly by a neighbor Mauro Martin Ortiz. The teenager's mother reported the crime.
"Immediately afterwards, police were contacted and they made a telephonic contact with Ortiz but he evaded arrest," said Arthur Oh, Deputy U.S. Marshal.
A few weeks later, the 29-year-old was indicted.
"Sexual assault on the 1st and 3rd degree and kidnapping. The bail was set at $1 million," said Oh.
Investigators say Ortiz was born in Mexico and moved to Hawaii from Alaska. He was last seen with his girlfriend Nohealani Carbaloc in August 2008. She was charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly giving false statements to detectives.
"Her current whereabouts are unknown, but it is believed she has maintained contact with Ortiz," said Oh.
Ortiz's criminal history includes several misdemeanors as well as a felony for auto theft.
"He's not suspected to be armed, but we consider him dangerous," said Oh.
Ortiz is described as 5'6" to 5'8", weighing 180 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and a scar on his upper lip.
Mauro Martin Ortiz is this week's wanted Wednesday fugitive.
