HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The surf is big. In fact, the consensus on Oahu's north shore is that this is the biggest swell we've had since last winter. Unfortunately for surfers, the conditions are pretty choppy.

Wednesday afternoon, no one was in the water in Haleiwa. About the only place people have been able to paddle out to catch waves is Waimea Bay.

The largest sets were rolling in at 15 -18 feet "Hawaiian" style. And the face heights are peaking at 25, maybe 30 feet, which was good for expert surfers and for people to watch from the beach.

The surf didn't get quite big enough for the Quicksilver Eddie Aikou Surf Invitational. But it was a nice warmup for those who will compete in that event.

The waves have come down just a bit in the past couple of hours but they're expected to be larger than usual for the next couple of days.
