WAIPAHU (HAWAII NEWS NOW) - Folks in central Oahu finally get back a neighborhood establishment.
After being closed for four years, the Waipahu District Park pool reopened on Friday. It closed back in 2004 for extensive repair work due to sinking soil.
It's something officials say they anticipated, since the pool sits on swamp land.
"If we didn't address the structural problems back then adequately we'd probably have to come back again and revisit this situation," said Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. "So unfortunately that's exactly what occurred."
"I know a lot of people have been very patient, waited a long time for this reopening," said Richard Haru, deputy director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. "Now that the work is complete, the public can enjoy this beautiful city and county facility."
The new and improved pool has a new pool deck, drains, utilities and landscaping, that came with a $2.2 million price tag.
