Maui enjoying Veteran’s Day despite threat of stormy weather

LAHAINA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - The wind is whipping in Lahaina. As you look out toward the ocean, it's choppy and messy, but we haven't seen a drop of rain here on the west side. It's been sunny all day.

Many here chose to spend their Veteran's Day holiday outdoors in spite of the threat for impending heavy rain and flooding.

On the other side of the island, mainly the Hana area and the slopes of Haleakala on the east side, it's been a different story.

They've been seeing their fair share of moisture and rainfall. As we were driving along Honoapiilani Highway, localized showers dampened the windward side of Lanai.

We received word that on Lanai they canceled outdoor activities at the hotel and closed jeep access dirt roads.

One thing's for sure, here on the west side, it's so dry, we could probably use some moisture. In the Hana area, which is susceptible to erosion rock and mud slides, too much rain could be a problem and downright dangerous.
