IWILEI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu Community college celebrated the historic moment Monday.
The school's "Berlin Wall Freedom Monument" contains an actual piece of the Berlin Wall.
Monday's ceremony featured hula, music, and speakers, including Tina Mehnert, who fled from East Germany, along with her family.
She says the monument serves as a symbol of democracy and freedom, and the downfall of communism.
"I get emotional every time I see the wall here at Honolulu Community College," Mehnert said. "It's such a special moment for myself and my family."
The piece of the Berlin Wall weighs three tons, and was shipped 12,000 miles from Germany to Honolulu.
