MAKAPU'U (HawaiiNewsNow) - Work on a hazardous hillside in east Oahu will slow down drivers for months. The state is getting ready to tackle the "rocky slope" near Makapu'u. Details of the plan will be presented at the Waimanalo neighborhood board meeting Monday night. Workers will check the foundation and scale the slope near Makapu'u beach park to look for weak spots. The $8 million project will also include the construction of a retaining wall and there will be full lane closures at night. "We're gonna try to like I said keep the lanes open as much as we can during the day and do the majority of our work at night. but this is really important project because we really want to be proactive and work on that slope before it actually becomes a major problem and we have to close the highway." The project, which starts Nov. 29, was initially scheduled to last 16 months, but the state hopes to cut that time in half. Tonight's meeting at the Waimanalo school library starts at 7:30 PM.
