HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii leaders are heading overseas on a mission to promote business, but that's not all.
The Hawaii Filipino Chamber of commerce just took off a few hours ago. They'll visit four cities in the Philippines over a span of two weeks.
But it's not all about business. They're also bringing much needed supplies for typhoon victims.
They're all packed up and ready to go. The 37-member Hawaii delegation will attend workshops and meet with public officials in four Philippine cities, including Manila.
"Our economy in Hawaii is really down at this time and I think with this mission, we're hoping to bring some business back to Hawaii and vice versa," Hawaii Filipino Chamber of Commerce president Rosemarie Mendoza said.
It's the 21st Trade Mission to the Philippines. It tries to create new connections and strengthen activities between Hawaii and filipino businesses.
"Some people here in Hawaii want to do a trade to the Philippines and try to get businesses going for them in the Philippines as well, to bring some economy to here in Hawaii," Mendoza said.
This year's mission focuses on Hawaii real estate investments and international banking. It'll also tackle the areas of architecture, engineering and environmental consulting.
In addition, they'll discuss the retirement possibilities the Philippines presents to some in Hawaii.
But this two week trip will also help out typhoon victims. More than 20 boxes are packed with donations from Hawaii's filipino community.
"First time the Trade Mission is doing that because of the coincidence of the typhoon that's happened recently," Trade Mission chairperson Rose Churma said.
The Trade Mission will also celebrate the 100th year of Visayan immigration to Hawaii with a premiere showing of a historic documentary.
It chronicles the first 100 years of the filipino community in Hawaii.
"This is a yearly project of the Filipino Chamber and we want to revitalize it and make it to a higher level of what the Trade Mission is all about," Mendoza said.
