Police Break Up Auto Theft Ring

By: Stephanie Lum

(KHNL) - Honolulu police have charged the main suspect of an auto theft ring in Kalihi today.

Police say tips from concerned residents led to the arrest of 30 year old Edward Ladera at his residence on Aoao Place yesterday.

Next door neighbors reported seeing suspects stripping motorcycles and heavy foot traffic at the Kalihi home.

A neighbor we spoke with didn't want to be identified but said something had to be done.

"I think it came to the point where it was too much was going on, and you just had to do something. I think they have to realize that this is a residential area," the neighbor explained.

Three stolen vehicles including a Chevy pick up truck and a Jaguar were recovered.

Police also seized a total of five stolen motorcycles from the Kalihi property as well.

Ladera was charged today with two counts of auto theft.

His bail was posted at $25,000.

HPD detectives say they're investigating additional suspects who may also be responsible for numerous motorcycle and vehicle thefts from all over the island.
